General Information

 September12, 2001.

·        There is no information about a threat to Americans in Bahrain.

·        The Embassy is open for business as usual today.  We will be closed on Thursday and Friday for the weekend, as usual, and open again on Saturday.

·        The Bahrain School is continuing its normal operations, with additional security in place.

·        US military facilities around the globe have been placed on high alert following the incident.  This includes facilities in Bahrain.

·        Q:  Why have the embassies in Kuwait and Riyadh and other Gulf capitals closed, and the embassy in Bahrain has remained open?

·        Unless there is a regional directive from Washington that embassies should close, the decision is left up to the Ambassador and the security personnel of each embassy separately.  The US Embassy in Manama made the decision to remain open today.

·        Q:  What are you telling American citizens to do now?

·        We are asking all American citizens in Bahrain to stay calm, remain alert, and to exercise due caution.  We have no information about any increased threat to American citizens in Bahrain.  Any updates to this information will be conveyed via the Embassy hotline (255-048), the Embassy web page (www.usembassy.com.bh), and the warden system.

·        Q:  What should we do if a friend or loved one may have been a victim of one of these attacks?

·        First, please stay calm and be patient in your attempts to place a call to the United States.  Phone lines are operating at capacity or beyond in the New York City and Washington DC areas.

·        Second, please be aware that the southern part of Manhattan Island, and specific areas around the White House and other Washington area landmarks, have been evacuated for at least portions of yesterday.  If the person you are trying to contact lives in one of these areas, they may not be at home.  Be patient.

·        Damage in the Washington area was limited to the Pentagon itself.  Unless you have reason to believe the person was in the Pentagon, they are probably safe.  The Pentagon has provided a number for Pentagon employees to contact  (see list below).

·        For the New York area, or for information from American or United Airlines, please contact the posted telephone numbers (see list below).

·        In addition, Bahrainis may wish to contact the Embassy of Bahrain in the United States for information about Bahraini citizens residing in the US.

·        Q:  Is the Embassy planning on making a condolence book available, or will it be holding any commemorative service?

·        The Embassy is flying its flag at half mast today in memory of the victims of this tragedy.  A decision on further commemorations will be made shortly.
